Photo Gallery: Rooms With Twin Beds

Draw inspiration from these grown-up spaces.

Two beds allow for flexibility in a guest room.

Place X-benches in front of beds for propping suitcases. "The guest rooms are right next to each other with their own ensuite baths. If I'm hosting friends with children, they can stay close together in their own little wing," says designer Sloan Mauran of her Palm Beach retreat.

Mix rustic and graphic elements for a fresh take on farmhouse style.

In the 2012 Princess Margaret Showhome guest room, twin beds with blue and earthy hued bedding are framed by tufted grey linen headboards. Stump stools used as bedside tables and muslin throw pillows add a rustic element. A graphic chevron-print rug highlights the room's golden accents.

Create a serene cottage look with a monochromatic palette and floral accents.

This guest room by New York designer Katie Ridder feels at once cool, clean and cottage quaint. Twin beds, simple horizontal panelling, traditional Scandinavian-style headboards and soft greens throughout give the room a distinct crispness. Feminine flourishes like the fresh flowers, fern-patterned fabrics and botanical artwork soften the look.

Paint auction and thrift-store finds with a fresh coat of white paint.

Dark wood twin headboards, bought at an auction, feel light and airy after the paint transformation. Keeping new and second-hand finds in the same white brings a cohesive look to a room. Here, everyday white linens are given a fresh look with pale blue and white quilts and accent pillows.

Cedar-beamed ceilings enhance the rustic style.

Toronto designer Barbara Purdy helped her brother Jim Hill and his wife Susan design the stone farmhouse of their dreams. They put a spin on classic country with contemporary artwork, graphic two-tone fabrics and eclectic furnishings. In the guest bedroom, twin iron beds and a wood chandelier boost the cosiness.

Go for a grown-up look with a masculine edge.

This guest bedroom's fabrics and finishes were inspired by men's tailoring. The grey wool carpet has thin white pinstripes and the drapes are blue and grey gingham. A mahogany dresser functions as a nightstand and divider between the twin beds. The room's cool colours have a calming effect, making it the perfect retreat for visitors.

Designer Philip Mitchell went to great effort to centre the doorway in this sweet little guest room, but the move was necessary to accommodate both twin beds. Sketches of schooners and the porthole mirror reference the home's location — the seaside town of Chester.

Two twin beds are more versatile than a Queen.

H&H style editor Michael Penney chose a cheery shade of yellow for the second floor guest room. He found these beds at a Toronto thrift store for a cool $125 each, then painted them black for contrast against the custard walls. The wicker trunks were only $70 each — perfect for storing extra bedding and for guests to set their luggage on. And he swapped the teal drapes for raw linen ones that wouldn't compete with the floral shams and plaid rug. In this room, he tried to balance everything that's cute and pretty with pieces that are more sober and humble. Read more about decorating his second floor.

Double-duty furniture makes for a well-used room.

An old apothecary cabinet in designer Karen Cole's guest bedroom opens up in several ways, including a drop-leaf desk. Antique twin beds loaded up with brightly patterned throw pillows offer an inviting spot to curl up and read, but can be made up as guest beds within minutes. Bold art and antique rugs contribute to a space that's as cosy and useful for Karen as it is for her guests.

Keep things simple & sweet for a country look.

Two hand-me-down twin bed frames were refurbished with a coat of white paint and paired with cheap & cheerful bed linens to make an affordable guest room. An green antique wood chest under the window and some fresh flowers give a nod to the outdoors.

A cottage bunkie is made into an inviting summer bedroom.

Tropical hues and organic touches invite visitors to kick back and relax. Textured rattan mats stapled to the walls create the look of pricey grasscloth wallpaper. Twin beds dressed in breezy polka dots can be used for sitting and sleeping. Mosquito nets add drama without cluttering the space.

Design a tranquil retreat with soft colours.

Muted colours and monochromatic patterns temper the formality of the furniture in this spare bedroom. The dark curved wood and brocade silk upholstery of the twin bed frames give the room a feminine, vintage feel.
